In the years 2011 to 2013 blogs I've used in texts in German and English language.
Last Sunday, I had the unique opportunity togther with my Friends Stavros and Filippos to photograph a Little Bustard.
The Bird used for his Migration Rest a field in the Buffer Zone Aera near Nicosia. A very rare Bird for Cyprus. A bird which is not often found in Cyprus, the last Little Bustard was recordet 34 years ago.
The light situations in the open Field at this Day time were not optimal for good photos, but the joy to see and photograph this rare bird have rocked.
Then, I was back in Paphos, came the sobering and extremly sad news in the late afternoon.
The Project 'GYPAS' aims at enriching the extremely small population of the Griffon Vulture in Cyprus with individuals from Crete, so that the population recovers.
The project is carried out under the 'Cross Border Cooperation Programme Greece-Cyprus 2007- 2013' and is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund and national funds of Greece and Cyprus.
The ‘Gypas’ Project started in September 2011 and will last for 24 months. The programme is led by the Game Fund in Cyprus, and partners in the program are BirdLife Cyprus and the Department of Forestry in Cyprus, and the Natural History Museum of Crete and Gortyna Municipality in Crete.
Meanwhile, the water level at the dam of Akhna has fallen and I could move for the first time on 12 October with my floating Hide in the middle of a group of migratory birds.
It is a nice experience again and again if you can watch and photographing the birds without any shyness at short range.
Also striking how many birds with injuries are handicapped among which is to pull on the flyway. Sometimes, there certainly humans have his hand in the game...
Here are some photo shoots made from the floating Hide.
At this point in my Blog, I will report on the autumn Migration from Akhna dam, the incoming messages about the Bird migration of BirdLife Cyprus are a great help.
Now it is a somewhat difficult task to capture the most interesting birds on the large dam with the camera so that I shall get decent shots for bird photographers. The most important element of these actions on the dam is the observation of birds and lots of patience with hours sitting in a camouflage tent or in my floating hide.
I must know at the dam and generally the habits of the birds to find the right places and recording times, where the lighting conditions at the dam in addition significantly narrow down the whole
A large area of reeds near the beach, which is still full water in the hot summer months, is an ideal stopover for many migratory birds and waterfowl.
The Reed area of Petounta was known already for a long time the bird experts on Cyprus, but only as a small and not particularly attractive bird area. Surprisingly this area has grown and leads, even in the hot months of July and August still water.
A water height of maximum 15 cm offers ideal conditions for waterfowl, waders and birds for their rest. I did already a couple of shots there with my friend Stavros, it's amazing how close the birds here come to our camouflage tents, often too close to photograph still.
However "we take in" our tents also at an early stage, before the birds from the reeds come out in the open area of the swamp or migratory birds arrive.
About 3 weeks ago, I visit Bishop´s pool to watch several little egrets on a eucalyptus tree and also I made some photos from a Distance 100 m, just for reording purposes for BirdLife Cyprus. Honestly I forgot this Visit soon.
On Saturday 17. July I have a detour to the pool then. There was not any interessting Records at the time. But there was an pleasant surprise discovered, 3 little egret families with 3-4 chicks in each nest, about 3-7 days old. These are the first nesting Egret at Bishop´s pool since 1981.
Young little egrets come quickly into the swing, approximately 30 days than fly around with the old birds. So I did on Sunday the first attempt with photos, but one nests hang over the water and the eucalyptus tree is made visible only from the corners of the Lake.
On 19 June, I received a note from my friend Colin regarding Bee-eater in the rearing of the next generation, with even a roller family.
On the same day, I went to said place near Mandria and watched the pit wall of a small sand and gravel pit for 2 hours, until I saw the breeding holes, were served by the old birds with food.
In the course of the last 2 weeks I have selected many different camera locations to observe and record the birds from all directions. To reach the appropriate places for the camouflage tent and the camera near the breeding caves, it was not easy in the loose debris. In addition, it had to be in time before the birds with the feedings began.
On 19 June, I received a note from my friend Colin regarding Bee-eater in the rearing of the next generation, with even a pair of roller.
The roller has already come with the sunrise at 5:30 with feed breeding caves. Large and small insects as well as small lizards are taken as food to the nest cavity.
The roller had chosen a finished nest cavity, about 1 m away family located by the entrance to the nest cavity of a Bee-eater in the wall. So direct neighborhoods without any problems.
The conservation project of the EU "Oroklini Life" I have seen up to now very cautious. The project is run by various organisations as partners together with the EU and the Oroklini municipality and BirdLife Cyprus has taken an important part here.
BirdLife Cyprus team, headed by Clairie Papazoglou and Melpo Apostolidou has many positive changes in the way brought.
In the last 3 weeks, I've searched the Oroklini Lake ever again. Many positive changes have become apparent.
The restorations of large areas around the Lake and the water management have brought the Lake already visible improvements.
Hallo, my name is George and I am the new mascot of the Nature 2000 - Oroklini Life Project of the EU in Cyprus and all project staff.
Actually, I'm a domestic goose, Yes, but at some point, it was too boring for me to stay at one place and so I flew out into the world.
I have connected me just with the Migrant birds and enjoy my independence.
So I'm landed even random for about 3 weeks at Oroklini Lake in Cyprus and I enjoy the stay on the Lake.
For some time, I've been watching this buzzard who resides in Mandria in the fields.
He shall ensure that the escape distance not less than 50 m and when I am too close he changes his position.
With a little patience I got a couple of photo shots when he was in action.
The common Crossbill (Loxia curvirostra) is living on the island of Cyprus in the Troodos Mountains.
The plumage of male birds is greenish-orange colored and differs from the reddish plumage of the European species.
The food consists mainly of seeds of spruce and other conifers. So he needs also Water and Minerals to compled his Food.
Here are a few images from a male Crossbill
Mandria Beach area is an ideal destination for many incoming migratory birds.
The sandy ground near the beach, covered with low bushes, is an ideal location for migratory birds and for guests.
The adjacent fields of large nurseries provide many food and lots of insects for the birds. An ideal location also for birdwatching and for photographers.
In the Akamas Peninsula, very close to the Avakas Gorge it´s a small side Valley, where I was walking with Jan Donal, a young snakes expert from Czech Republic. The most feared snake by the locals, the Macrovipera lebetina, is there often to find. Jan has captured in this area in the last few months several Macrovipera lebetina, big and small and views them in the Paphos Zoo for a wile where he was working this time.
After few Weeks always he suspended the Snakes on the same place out. The largest of the 4 snakes we take back to the Nature this Day was an older snake with approx. 1 m length, the smallest young snake from this summer was approx. 25 cm length.
Here a few pictures of the snake in their natural habitat.
On Friday I was the Akhna dam to watch the rising through Osprey fishing, hoping one of them in action to experience. Many other interesting birds in the water and near the shore were observed except for the three Ospreys. I had only eyes for the Osprey...
Many Thanks to Andreas for the Info.
Unfortunately, I had no good light during my visit the Osprey at Akhna dam, the whole day was very hot, but the sky was wreathed with clouds.
I could very well observe the two Osprey fishing, both were also always very successful and thereby showed great flight maneuver’s.
Unfortunately they flew with a booty getting away from my site, so I must once again repeat the whole hope also contribute to better light.
By the long drought, only some more water in the inlet channels is available at Oroklini Lake. There cavort the eels. food for the little egret.
It is difficult to find the feed for all other birds on the Lake.
But the first rain came down during my visit on October 1.
Weather in Cyprus
October, the time where the weather sometimes changed in a very short time. Because we are just 1.5 km away from the sea a strange feeling because sometimes arises when one observes how the nature changed in a very short time. Then there are the most beautiful light changes with magnificent play of colors in the clouds and in the garden at the plants.
But out on the sea, tornadoes are formed, you can observe how they pull up water from the sea and doing always more dangerous that flying to the island to. Until now, the spectacles then at least with us on the shore were finished.
2 times, I could observe the young Grey Wagtail over a period of 30 minutes from my tent.
She has stayed on in the same place for several days.
Directly above it the raised hide of Kingfisher and over this then the Arachnids, a successful mix.
The feeding of young researchers in the breeding caves is still full in progress, but the food supply grows.
Overall, I watch 4 breeding pais of European Roller often just 10 m apart in the rock face at this time.
The months of May and June have only a few new species of birds in the Garden.
But the numerical crowds at the watering hole have not decreased.
For this there are very beautiful flowers on the trees and the insects have greatly increased.
Yesterday, I could record a scops-owl for the first time.
The approximately 10 cm large OWL sits in the rigid front position in the tree and is there almost not to recognize.
The nest cavity with the female close is probably.
Where ever I am gone on Wednesday the Little Owl were already there.
Usually the couple purchased now their breeding hole and I can watch them good again at the today's sites when feeding the young.
Last Saturday, a demonstration of the ringing of migratory birds for interested bird friends was conducted by BirdLife Cyprus on a Field tripp near Neo Chorio.
More than 25 visitors could watch BirdLife Director Dr. Clairie Papazoglou and BirdLife ringing officer Alan Crabtree and her team at fixing the info rings, weighing and measuring the Birds.
There was also much information for the visitors about the bird species at Cyprus and the bird migration.
Here are some pictures from Saturday.
This morning I was at the Asprokremmos dam to locate a new place for observing and photographing the birds. Today, workers of the city of Paphos there worked again in order to expand the provisional trail through the Xeros River to the Dam. At the end of the dam a small area is now free of water, but the pools are all still full with water. I hope that the corner remains so quiet as it was now at the moment, it would be for the now there standing birds ideal conditions.
Today I have there seen and photographed Great White Egret (4), cattle egret (2) Wood Sandpiper (4), Common Sandpiper (3), Little Stint (7) and as a Highlight 1 Eleonora`s Falcon while drinking at the dam. There are some more Ducks and other Waders, but I can’t count ore named them.
There were only a few rainy days in April and so my Bird water station was frequently more used for bathing and drinking.
While waiting for the cuckoo yesterday evening also the hoopoe on the way has been kicked me, so I've seen today morning times after him.
What me again excited is the fact that this but striking color combination of relatively large Hoopoe on the ground and in the trees can be described as absolute top camouflage.
This one has retreated in the carob tree, he was so 5 meters away from me. However, I had to aim out of the car between the branches through.
In March the builders in the garden are on the road to get to the nest material.
There are now 5 nests of house sparrows on the whole site. The Velvet head warbler is the bird which bathes the most. Also 4 nests are built in the old olive tree.
In found in the Area around Lara Bay - Akamas reserve an colorful mix of birds over the winter. Near an old Stone
house many Birds use some Bushes and Carobtrees as central Meeting Point.
Together with my Friend Wahrmut we visit the Greater Flamingos in the Meneou pools near Larnaca Airport.
We can stay relatively close there to the birds and the Flamingos switch from time to time across the road to the atached pools on the other site. So it is a god place to make Bird in Flight photos as well.
Today I lucky enough to take up for the first time some photos from the Black Eastern Redstart (male) "ochruros phoenicuroides" from the Middle East with my Camera.
He is still the first reported in Cyprus at the moment.
Now the robins are on again all over the island spread to be found. Most of them stay here over the winter where they meet very good conditions.
Here a few pictures of the last few days, with one click directly to the robins Gallery.
A little drama in the air over the fields of Mandria has taken place. You don’t believe how fast the Peregrine Falcon captured a hooded Crow in the air and kills in the air.
With the prey lands 80 m away from me and starts immediately on their prey to plucking and eating.
Sorry, the Image quality not the best by the distance and the shimmering air, but I wanted to show you that as a documentary.
A group of about 8000 flamingos is currently in the Akrotiri Limassol Salt Lake .
There is a big wall of Flamingos near the shore and from time to time groups of Flamingos change here Place.
So we can see long lines of flying Birds with.
On the Asprokremmos Dam the Water level are going moor and more down and the Kingfisher need some help to go fishing, because the rocks he use normal are more and more in the try Areas.
So I install 3 wooden stocks to give him a place for his rest when hi is fishing there.
Next Day i was there to see how near i can go with the Camera now to this Wood stocks and i was wondering that the Kingfisher accepted me near then 7m to him without Camouflage with the Camera.
Asprokremmos Dam in the early Morning.
Tow Grey Herons came to the Dam and prepare landing on the shore.
In the last few days, I've visit mostly in the vineyards around Kathikas. Amazing currently there which variety of birds I found. On the upper floor the Kestrels and Eleonora´s Falcon get hawks that dispute, sometimes are to watch up to 6 hawks in the area and there is also direct clashes.
Amazing that the Kestrel then usually asserts itself. Noteworthy is also the short flight distance, sometimes they fly directly to me so that I can react not so quickly with the Camera.
The Black-headed Bunting has arrived; however, I have seen up to now only females, there still a lot of smaller Warbler and 2 species, which I still need be clear. Also I've added the masked Shrike chick and see him ever again, old Shrikes no one there I met.
Today I am arrived around 5:30 on the Asprokremmos damAsprokremmos. At this time, a few Roller and magpies were traveling. Then, against 6:15, a single Seagull has arrived at the end of the dam. Across the parched area, 2 Kestrel have searched for food. Later, an Eleonora's Falcon wae in the sky to see. I changed the location to get a better overview. While a Levante Otter went me on the way in the dry grass, so that I put my place in the parent.
On the return trip I discovered a young buzzard Lakeside, 30 meters to Lakeside, but with full sun in the back. You got lucky enough to encounter such a bird so close then but so unfavourable lighting conditions. Time for the tripod set up no longer was and so I could use only contact points at the car with the heavy telephoto lens.
Provides optimal image quality it is under these light conditions and ink cannot be expected to, but I think because my chance get over time. Patience is a prerequisite for good wildlife shots.
